Midwest Energy supports cancer services

Published 2:33pm Thursday, September 13, 2012

The Midwest Energy family is supporting local and regional cancer services this fall with two special efforts.

Since August, Midwest Propane has been “Fueling the Fight” in a special campaign to raise money and awareness for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.

Customers can support efforts with donations and referrals, and the company will donate a penny for every gallon of propane delivered during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The foundation provides breast cancer education and research, as well as screening and treatment programs for uninsured and underinsured women in Michigan. Midwest Propane is a non-regulated subsidiary of Midwest Energy Cooperative.

Midwest Energy Cooperative invites the community to support the work of Cass County Cancer Service by displaying “Pink Flair to be Breast Cancer Aware” during October.

On Sept. 28, Jen Sobasky, a hair stylist and certified extension specialist from Mane Event in Elkhart, will set up shop in the cooperative’s Cassopolis District Service Center with a selection of pink feathers and hair extensions that she will style into hair for a $10 per application donation. She will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or while supplies last.

Services and supplies will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The office is located at 901 E. State St.

Sobasky is donating her time for this effort, and Midwest Energy Cooperative is covering the cost of the supplies. All proceeds will be donated to Cass County Cancer Service, an agency that provides limited financial assistance, loaned medical equipment and information and referral to encourage the physical and emotional well being of cancer patients living in Cass County.

Information about the agency and breast cancer prevention will be available at the event.

Last year’s inaugural Pink Flair event generated more than $1,600.

Midwest will also make available two items for purchase beginning Sept. 28 and through October (or while supplies last), with all proceeds supporting Cass County Cancer Service. For a $20 donation, you can purchase a “Find the Cure” pink ribbon yard sign. It is 12.8 inches wide by 23.5 inches high and is a very visible way to show support. You can also carry your show of support wherever you go with a minimum $2 donation for a pink boxing glove key chain. This is a constant reminder of the fight to find a cure for this disease.

There are limited numbers of items available at each office, and purchases must be made by cash or check.
