COLOMA – A year ago, the Dowagiac tennis program was on the shelf after not having enough players to compete.

Gone was its long-time coach and the prospects for the program looked dim.

But Dowagiac hired a new coach and Sonny Swartz has enough players to compete this season.

After weeks of work, the Chieftains tennis team picked up its first victory with a 5-3 Wolverine Conference West Division victory over Coloma Wednesday.

Dowagiac won three of the four singles flights and split the doubles flights to come up with the win over the Comets.

“ It’s nice to see are hard work paying off,” Swartz said. “ I’m so happy for the kids.”
