Chieftain freshmen beat Plainwell, JV come up short

The Dowagiac freshmen football team bounced back from its loss to Otsego by defeating visiting Plainwell 20-7 Thursday.

“The Chieftains showed that when everyone does their job and works hard that good things tend to happen,” Dowagiac coach Chad Perrin said.

Scott Hassle threw for a touchdown, while Brandon Winchester Jones had a pair of touchdowns. Jared Hatch had a 1- and 2-point conversion. Austin Taggart led the receivers with three catches.

Defensively, Winchester Jones had a pair of interceptions and three pass deflections. Josh Lamphere and Jacob Davis led the team in tackles.

“The whole defense deserves credit for playing a solid game,” Perrin said.

Dowagiac will host Berrien Springs Thursday.

 

JV football

The Dowagiac JV football team was defeated by visiting Plainwell 28-21.

The Chieftains trailed 14-7 at halftime.

“I was very proud of our effort tonight,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We were down all night and kept coming back. The difference was two kickoff returns for touchdowns.”

Scoring for Dowagiac were Bryce Dodd, Brandon Hatch and Devin Chapman.
