James M. Waalkes, 52, of Grand Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012.

He was born in Kalamazoo on April 21, 1960, to Martin and Lois (Loughery) Waalkes. James is a graduate of Dowagiac Union High School and Central Michigan University.

He had been employed at Tru Green in Grandville and Telecom Industry and was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids. He was a loving father whose children meant the world to him.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Waalkes of Kalamazoo; son, Justin Waalkes of Kalamazoo; granddaughter, Sofia Hargett; parents, Martin (Lois) Waalkes of Muskegon; brother, Robert (Cathi) Waalkes of Muskegon; sister, Susan (Bradley) Petty of Grand Rapids; former spouse, Lisa Waalkes of Grand Rapids.

The service will be held Friday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. and visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids with the Rev. Robert Appold officiating.

Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Kent County.
