A recount Tuesday morning that lasted into early afternoon underscoring the winner of the Aug. 7 primary election for District 1 commissioner was Bob Wagel. The ballots, recounted by hand, showed the Republican incumbent won by five votes, not two.

Commissioner Ed Goodman, also an incumbent, petitioned for the recount after election results showed Wagel won by a mere two votes. Wagel petitioned against the recount, which went to a hearing in front of the Cass County Board of Canvassers, which decided a recount was necessary.

“I’m glad I prevailed,” Wagel said after the recount was completed. “I want to thank the Board of Canvassers and county employees for working so hard.”

Goodman congratulated Wagel on his victory and said he will miss serving the county.

“I’m happy to see everything go smoothly with no problems,” Goodman said. “Congratulations to Mr. Wagel; I’ll miss serving the constituents, but, hopefully, I can be of service somewhere else.”

Meanwhile, Wagel will be campaigning for the general election, slated for Nov. 6.

“I will continue to campaign and speak with voters,” Wagel said. “You can’t take anything for granted.”
