Just when it looked like Dowagiac was going to pick up that elusive win Wednesday night, fate stepped in.

On a ball that looked like it was heading out with the match tied at 12-12, someone it remained just inside the line giving visiting Comstock a lead in the fifth and deciding set.

The Colts went on to edged Dowagiac 15-13 and win the Wolverine Conference volleyball match 3-2.

The Chieftains rallied to win the first set 25-23, trailing Comstock 20-16 at one point.

The Colts came back and won the second set 25-16 to square the match at 1-1. The third set went to Dowagiac 25-18 and it appeared the Chieftains had seized control.

But Comstock came back in the fourth set, won 28-26, to set up a fifth and deciding set.

Dowagiac got off to a great start, leading 4-1 after a two service winners by Madison Proshwitz, a service error by the Colts and a hitting error by Comstock.

The Colts came storming back and took a 6-5 lead when the Chieftains were guilty of a hitting error.

The set went back and fourth with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage.

Comstock went up 10-7, but a kill by Brittany Williams sparked Dowagiac, which got an ace by Casey Weldy and a kill by Rachel Bailey to cut the lead to 11-10.

A hitting error by the Colts squared the match at 11-11.

Over the final four points, only Bailey’s kill to make it 13-13 was the only scoring to come via some type of error.

“Definitely not ashamed at all,” Dowagiac coach Sara Lawrence said. “We came out and battled. I’m happy with that. Our main weakness is when we get four or five points down they start shutting down. They start getting down on themselves and it’s not good for the rest of the team.

“For some reason we can’t take the lead and keep the lead. We get up so far and then say we have a bad serve. Then they start to get down and they stay down.”
