Dowagiac girls cross country team third at Lawrence

LAWRENCE — The Dowagiac girls cross country team was third at the Lawrence Invitational Friday.

Hartford won the girls title with 25 points. Dowagiac finished with 68 points.

Christina Preston finished ninth with a time of 25:00. Sarah Long was 10th (25:03), Rachel Bailey 26th (26:22), Paige Schaus 18th (30:34), Katie Murphy 19th (30:36), Corinne Kasper 20th (31:00), Brittany Smith 25th (34:00), Heather Stolpe 31st (42:49) and Madeline White 32nd (42:50).

Hartford also won the boys title with 31 points. Dowagiac finished with 100 points.

Ben Thompson was ninth with a time of 20:35. DeYonte Sullivan 15th (21:21), Dean Klann 18th (21:36), Sean Thompson 26th (23:24), Tony Kidman 32nd (25:21), Jacob Peters 33rd (25:30) and Shane Filley 34th (28:05).

“Several of our newcomers had very good debuts including DeYonte Sullivan and Dean Klann for the boys, and Christina Preston and Rachel Bailey for the girls,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “Ben Thompson and Sarah Long had a good summer of training and it showed today. Senior Brittany Smith showed a lot of improvement from last year. The girls have several more athletes ready to race by the next weekend who will provide a lift to the team.”
