VICKSBURG – In Dowagiac’s 21-7 victory over Vicksburg, the Chieftains finished with 386 yards in total offense, including 299 yards on the ground.

Todd McIntyre led Dowagiac with 95 yards on eight carries. Quarterback Brett Scanlon added 71 yards on nine carries, including a touchdown.

Brendon Murray had 42 yards on five carries and a pair of touchdowns. D.J. Hunt finished with 66 yards on 14 totes.

The Chieftains were 7-12 throwing the ball for 87 yards and an interception. Cal Cox was 3-for-3 for 61 yards. McIntyre caught three of those passes for 47 yards.

Vicksburg finished with 194 yards in total offense. Caleb Breitenbach was 7-of-16 for 127 yards. Colin McCaw caught five passes for 105.

Both teams finished with a pair of fumbles.

Dowagiac was 6-of-14 on third down compared to 1-of-10 for the Bulldogs.

Chieftains coach Mike Stanger knows his team has some work to do before it’s home opener against Comstock Thursday.

“We’re still putting it all together,” he said. “I thought all our backs ran hard. I thought we got a great effort out of them. Defensively we game up some yards here and there, but for the most part defensively we played well.

“The two turnovers hurt us. Two turnovers in the first half, one in the red zone going in and penalties hurt us. We had a couple of nice plays called back. We really work hard to limit those like every team does.”
