THREE RIVERS — The Dowagiac golf team did not put up a score in the opening match of the Wolverine Conference season Monday.

The league began play in Three Rivers at Sauganash Golf Club.

The host Wildcats shot 202 to win the team title. Otsego was second at 204 and Vicksburg third at 204.

Plainwell was fourth at 205 and Vicksburg fifth at 206.

Veteran Dowagiac coach Van Johnson had just three players available to compete Monday.

Haley Smith shot 54 to lead the Chieftains. First-year golfer Kristyn Turner, a senior, shot 66 and freshman Kelsey Smith shot 74.

Maggie Cripe did not play Monday, but will be with the team Wednesday when it hosts the Wolverine Conference at Indian Lake Hills Golf Course.

“Kristyn and Kelsey had never played in a match before, so they are looking to improve and so are we on Wednesday,” Johnson said. “We will play a lot better Wednesday because they will not be as nervous.”
