A new scam involving an offer of gift cards to several big box stores is popping up in area mailboxes, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Joseph Underwood reports his office is aware of a post card being received in the mail claiming to offer $100 gift cards for providing information and a small fee.

The post cards are supposed to be for gift cards to places like Walmart, Target and Meijer. The post cards reportedly have a confirmation number which the person is to provide when they call into the company.

The person is directed to call an 800 number and provide personal information and credit card numbers. The return address is listed as being in Herndon, Va.

Citizens are urged to use extreme caution when dealing with such offers through the mail, over the phone or through the internet.
