KALAMAZOO –  The first scrimmage of the Western Michigan fall football camp was held during Thursday’s practice.

With referees, a sometimes-running clock and both sides of the ball being separated on each sideline. This was the first game-like experience for the Broncos this year.

The quick rotational offense of the head coach Bill Cubit seemed to be finely tuned as the offense was very productive in moving down the field when the ball was put in various positions. The first team Bronco offense started at the 50-yard line two consecutive drives and each time ended up scoring a touchdown, and quickly.

On the first drive, quarterback Alex Carder went 4-for-4 for 28 yards. The ball was rushed in by junior running back Antoin Scriven from the 1-yard line. The drive only lasted five plays. The next drive was even more impressive, ending with a touchdown in just three plays. Carder completed on all three of his passes culminating in a 16-yard touchdown pass to Justin Collins.

The second team offense was clicking as well.  From the 50-yard line they put in a nice four-play drive that ended in a touchdown. Freshman quarterback Zach Terrell went 2-for-3 for 34 yards and connected on a magnificent catch by freshman receiver Jaime Wilson for the touchdown. Wilson had to tip the ball up in the air, spin around the defender and then track the ball again to make the catch for a touchdown.

Not only was the offense looking good but the defense had their share of big plays as well. Freshman safety Demetris Ates made an interception at the goal line and had a 23-yard return. The highlight play of the day however went to freshman safety David Reed who picked up the caused fumble at the 6-yard line and returned it 94 yards for the touchdown.

Carder ended up going 12-for-17 for 127 yards, one touchdown and one rushing score. Scriven had 83 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson had four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Eric Monette had two catches for 27 yards and back-up quarterback Terrell went 7-for-12, for 86 yards and one touchdowns.
