Brookside Learning Center, in Cassopolis, will welcome students and their parents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18, to pick up backpacks filled with school supplies, thanks to the United Way of Southwest Michigan and the Lewis Cass Intermediate School District.

The fourth annual event, taking place at 61682 Dailey Rd., Cassopolis, also will provide free haircuts and dental screenings. Parents will not be asked to fill out any financial form to receive the backpacks. Supplies are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Identification kits from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and library cards will be offered. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Berrien and Cass Counties will also be on hand.

Volunteers will be working Friday at Brookside to fill the backpacks with supplies. According to Lewis Cass ISD, $25 fills a backpack with necessary supplies, such as writing utensils, folders, binders and loose-leaf paper.

A total of 1,000 backpacks are expected to be handed out Saturday.

The next backpack program event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22, at Marcellus United Methodist Church, 197 W. Main St., in Marcellus. Roughly 200 backpacks will be available at that location.
