Dorothy Mae Schmidt, 99, of River Bluff Road, Niles, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph unexpectedly, but of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 11, 1913, in St. Joseph to William and Hulda (Schultz) Tollas.

She was a 1932 graduate of St. Joseph High School.

On July 16, 1939, in Saint Joseph, she married Walter J. “Pappy” Schmidt and moved to the Niles area soon after. Walter preceded her in death on June 4, 1999.

Dorothy was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Niles, where she was very active in the Women’s Fellowship.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Bill) Saunders of Sister Lakes and Joan Schmidt of Niles; grandson, Scott Saunders of Niles; granddaughter, Amy (Bill) Green of Edwardsburg; and five great-grandchildren, Derek Green, Zoe Laubach, Channing Green, Madelyn Saunders and Allen Saunders.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Herbert, Alfred, Henry and Charles Tollas; and three sisters, Marguerite Tollas, Gladys Smith and Agnes Landeck.

A funeral service for Dorothy Mae Schmidt will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at St. John’s United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harry L. Clark officiating.  Interment will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
