One block in downtown St. Joseph will come alive with works of pastel art during St. Joseph Today’s 11th annual Chalk the Block Aug. 3-5.

The free event begins at 4 p.m. Friday, with judging under way at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Chalk the Block area, along Broad Street, between Lake Boulevard and State Street, will also be barricaded Sunday for public viewing.

According to Molly Davidson, intern at St. Joseph Day, the event will host about 25 sponsored artists.

“Past years, we have had the 3D drawings,” she said. “Someone did a bridge overlooking a canyon. Different artists will do something that represents their sponsor.”

The artists have 24 hours to complete their creations, which must be finished by 4 p.m. Saturday.

Local judges will name first- ($100), second- ($75) and third-place ($50) winners, which will have their work displayed on the St. Joseph Today website and promotional materials.
