A man police believe invaded the home of an animal control officer in Galien Township was apprehended Thursday after a near two-day manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies.

Jonnathon Jay Davis, 39, of Berrien County, is facing charges of first-degree home invasion and felony firearms possession.

Davis is at the St. Joseph County Jail awaiting extradition to Berrien County for a parole absconder charge. He was on parole for an original charge of home invasion in Berrien County.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department responded at approximately 10:11 a.m. Wednesday to a home invasion in progress call in the 4600 block of Kinne Road in Galien Township.

The caller/homeowner arrived at home and noticed an unknown vehicle in his driveway. The homeowner made entry into his house to find a white male inside his residence carrying stolen property. The suspect was temporarily cooperative while the homeowner called 911.

The suspect then became uncooperative and attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle. The homeowner was armed and fired one shot from a handgun into the rear tire of the motor vehicle, disabling it. The suspect exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The suspect’s vehicle, which was left at the scene, contained inside it several items ranging from electronics to firearms that belonged to the victim/homeowner.

Several agencies involved attempted to locate suspect in the nearby area with no immediate success. The investigation continued throughout the day and night involving several agencies.

Investigators received information Thursday that the suspect was hiding out at a residence in South Bend. The suspect was placed into custody at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Bowman Road in South Bend due to successful coordination between Berrien County Sheriff Department, SBPD Road Patrol, SBPD Street Crimes Unit, SBPD Detective Bureau and Michigan State Absconder Unit.
