EDWARDSBURG — Edwardsburg celebrates the centennial of its 1912 incorporation as a village Labor Day weekend.

An ad hoc committee Thursday morning began planning a community-wide birthday bash from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at Gunn Park on Pleasant Lake, with Sept. 2 slated as a back-up rain date.

Nine people attended the organizational meeting at Village Hall and set another get-together for 7 p.m. July 25 in conjunction with Uptown Improvement Association’s meeting.

Martha Ireland, Edwardsburg branch manager, said Greater Niles Community Federal Union, will donate hot dogs and buns.

There are plans for live music, commemorative T-shirts, birthday cake and green-and-white state highway signs to acknowledge the milestone by a community residents have called home for 185 years.

The party will be potluck. Bring your own table service and lawn chairs. Water will be provided.

There will be old-fashioned games, such as sack races, for children.

There was some discussion that, if the event is well-attended, it could become a fall companion to the popular Memorial Day Festival.
