The 39th Annual Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament is looking for participants.

The singles divisions will be played July 20-22 at the Dowagiac Middle School courts. The men’s, women’s and mixed doubles divisions will be played July 28-29.

The cost of this year’s tournament is $7 for singles and $14 for doubles.

The singles tournament will begin July 20 at 6 p.m.

The tournament will continue July 21 at 8 a.m. with the finals scheduled for July 22, also beginning at 8.

The deadline for entering the singles tournament is July 17 at 5 p.m. The tournament draw will be posted at the middle school courts July 19.

The men’s and women’s doubles tournament will begin at 8 a.m. July 28.

Some matches could be played July 27 beginning at 6 p.m.

The mixed doubles tournament will begin at 8 a.m. July 29.

Entry deadline for the doubles tournament is July 24 at 5 p.m. The tournament draw will be posted at the DMS courts July 26.

The tournament is open to all residents of Cass County, as well as graduates of the Dowagiac Union School District and current or former members of the Dowagiac Tennis Association.

Matches will be a best two- of-three format with a 12-point tiebreaker in all sets.

The tournament is a single elimination format with a feed-in consolation round. The feed-in matches will be an eight-game Pro Set.

Balls will be furnished for all matches.

The board reserves the right to change the format or cancel the event if not enough entries are received.

Last year, Dave Negron of Niles captured the men’s championship. Negron, who reached the finals in 2010, defeated Marc Tyrakowski 6-4 and 6-0.

Sue Watson won her record 15th city singles championship with a 6-3 and 6-1 win over Hope Daniel.

Larry Watson, who holds a record 17 men’s singles championships, paired up with Jim Darr to win their third doubles championship in four years.

Watson and Darr defeated defending champions Negron and Mike Urbanski 6-3 and 7-5. The pair rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to earn the championship.

Alex Wats and Haley Jones of Edwardsburg defeated Sue Watson and Shelly Urbanski 6-1 and 6-4 to claim the women’s doubles crown.

The mixed doubles championship went to Edwardsburg’s Watts and Anthony Dopp as they defeated Hope and Mark Daniel in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3.
