Aaron Garcia, born in Tucson, Ariz., and raised in Three Rivers, began as a musician at age 5. At age 9, he moved on to the viola, but he said that, “music was like homework.”

Years later, however, at age 13, Garcia began to play guitar, and music was “much more fun by then.” He began writing music, and he was the only one among his friends that could sing. He began his first musical project, In The Grey, with two friends and a family member, and then began to realize that he was more into acoustic music.

In The Grey failed, but he moved on to form another group with Logan Shields, who still performs with him. This group was called Settle for the Skyline, and they performed several times during lunch periods at Three Rivers High School, and also produced two albums.

“It was really great to grow in music together,” Garcia said.

Today, Garcia is working toward his bachelor’s degree in music composition at Western Michigan University and performing with Shields, who plays bass guitar and provides backup vocals.

Garcia, Shields and fellow music student, Blake Morgan, who plays drums, perform every two weeks at the Riviera Theatre Bar in historic downtown Three Rivers. On occasion, recent WMU graduate Erik Johnson, playing saxophone and bongo drums, will join them.

They do other performances, as Garcia said he will basically perform anywhere, but the performances at the Riviera are their only regular shows. These performances, from 8 to 11 p.m., feature a variety of different sounds from jazz to covers of popular music to acoustic rock and an array of songs they have written.

These performances take place every other Thursday, and the next performance will be July 12.
