Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood, Jr. is reporting that at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday, July 7, deputies responded to a 911 call at the swimming area on Indian Lake Road,  north of M-62 on Indian Lake, for a subject that had been pulled from the lake, not breathing and unresponsive.

Upon arrival, deputies found Patrice Carter, 20, of South Bend, Ind., lying near the shore conscious and alert. Deputies were able to determine through witness statements that Carter was playing with the family dog in about two feet of water, when she disappeared. Family members found her under water, not breathing. A scream for help by family brought Tavis Graham, of Dowagiac, and Nick Nakatsuka, of Hammond, Ind., to Carter’s aid. The two men were able to get Carter on to shore were CPR was started. After just seconds of CPR, Carter began to breath again on her own.

Carter was transported to Lakeland Hospital in Niles were her condition is unknown at this time. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Pride Care Ambulance.
