Rep. Sharon Tyler announced Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that requires more and earlier financial reporting for new political parties in an effort to increase transparency and help voters make informed decisions. The legislation was introduced by Tyler as House Bill 5059.

The bill is now Public Act 273 and is part of a collaborative effort with Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to ensure safe and fair elections in Michigan. The comprehensive plan improves election integrity through stronger campaign finance laws, new policies and the expanded use of technology.

“By requiring more and earlier reporting, this act will now allow the public to have a better understanding of which groups are financing new political parties,” said Tyler, R-Niles.
“This kind of transparency is necessary to guarantee Michigan voters have the information they need to make confident decisions at the polls.”

Tyler is also reminding all Michigan residents to register to vote. Residents can register at a county, city or township clerk’s office, the local Secretary of State office or by submitting paperwork found at www.michigan.gov/sos.
