Talented youth will get the chance to shine this summer at Second Baptist Church’s Youth Camp Talent Explosion 2012, which begins registration at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The camp, referred to as YCTE 2012, is in its inaugural year at the church, focused at giving talented local students fun summer activities.

While the camp is located at the church, 203 S. Paul St., Dowagiac, community students from all backgrounds are invited to take part. Classes, taught by area guest instructors, will focus on subjects such as written word, spoken word, sign language, singing and dancing.

“We want to give the youth of Dowagiac a platform to express themselves and maybe find a career path they can follow,” Pastor Gene Staples said.

Some of the instructors include Dave Carew, choral instructor for Southwestern Michigan College; Antonette Green, dance instructor from Miss Michelle and Company; Deborah Brookins, spoken-word writer and artist; Rain Adams, life coach; and Crystal Smith, youth coordinator.

The camp is free to any child interested in participating. Beginning Saturday, registration at 9:30 a.m. will be followed by the first day of camp, which starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m.

The camp also offers a free, hot lunch to campers, made possible by donations from private and public sectors.

Parents and students will receive a registration packet upon arriving. For more information, call the church at (269) 782-6197, or email SecondBaptistDowagiac@yahoo.com.
