Dowagiac Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports that the Dowagiac Police Department conducted underage alcohol buy attempts last week with one business selling alcohol to a minor.
Police utilized an 18-year-old “decoy” to attempt to make a purchase of alcohol from all of the businesses in Dowagiac that hold a current liquor license.
This included all bars, grocery and convenience stores within the city.
A total of 15 locations were checked. The decoy was refused the purchase at all businesses except one, Dollar General on Park Place.
The decoy was able to purchase a 12-pack of beer from a clerk at the Dollar General store after providing a valid identification showing that the decoy was 18 years old.
After the purchase, officers made contact with the manager of the store to make her aware of the purchase and the clerk was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor.
This violation will also be reported to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
Atkinson reminds businesses and the public as well that it is against Michigan law to provide alcohol to a person under the age of 21.
Dowagiac Police Department will continue to take an active role in making sure local businesses are not selling alcohol to minors and will continue to conduct decoy buys throughout the summer and on a continual basis throughout the year.
