Three Eastside Connections Elementary students were recognized Wednesday for their ability to demonstrate service above self.

Second-grader Layla True received the Joan Schmidt Volunteer Award, Caiden Baxter received the Bill Prenkert Volunteer Award and Samson Thalman received Honorable Mention Award.

True volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House charity and even asked friends to donate to the charity instead of giving her presents on her birthday.

During the summer months, Baxter is involved with Meals on Wheels and is known for his willingness to help around the school, whether it is in the cafeteria or office.

Thalman was recognized for helping at Eastside.

The awards will be presented every year to deserving Eastside students. They are named after community volunteers Schmidt and Prenkert. Both were heavily involved in helping re-open Eastside at the beginning of the school year.
