Brandywine tennis 23rd at state finals

HOLLAND — A pair of Brandywine doubles teams each won a single match at the Division 4 State Tennis Finals Friday.

Mackenzie Shelton and Carlie Newman won their opening round match against Lucy Grinenko and Emma Craft of Jackson Lumen Christi 6-3 and 6-3. The previously undefeated Bobcat duo then lost to top-seed Heidi Lemon and Sarah Spangler of Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart 6-4 and 6-3.

Brandywine’s No. 4 doubles team of Cassidy Purucker and Abbey Cole defeated Anna Kiefer and Sarah Landstrom of North Muskegon 6-2, 4-6 and 7-6 in the opening round. They were then knocked out of the tournament by No. 3 seed Carolina Marshall and Macy Pell of Williamston 6-4 and 6-3.

The Bobcats finished 23rd with two points.

Academy of the Sacred Heart won the tournament with 29 points. Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central was second with 22 and Ann Arbor Greenhills third with 17.
