PAW PAW — The record-setting run of the Dowagiac soccer team came to a screeching halt against Paw Paw in the Division 3 District finals Saturday.

Taylor Underhill and Elena Olivares each had two goals and an assist to lead the Redskins to a 6-0 victory and a spot in next week’s regional semifinal for the fourth straight year,

Paw Paw (17-2-1) has lost to Hudsonville Unity Christian in each of the last two seasons. Unity Christian will be the opponent for the Redskins Tuesday night.

As it had in the previous meeting, Paw Paw dominated the first half as they were allowed too much space by the Chieftain defense according to coach Mike Williams, who will not return to the girls team next year.

“If everyone is not tight on their marks, this is what happens,” he said. “People in the center weren’t on their marks. We knew we had to do that. If we give them any room they were going to score. It’s the same thing that happen the last time we played them. We gave them too much room.”

Underhill had both of her goals and the assist in the opening 40 minutes of play. Selena Martinez, Kayleigh Davies and Olivares also scored in the first half.

Olivares scored the only goal of the second half with Martinez picking up the assist.

Dowagiac (13-8-1) couldn’t mount much of a challenge offensively as it was limited to just one shot, which Paw Paw keeper Natalie Kmet had no problem stopping.

The Redskins finished with 14 shots. Alyssa Fritz made eight saves, several of which were spectacular in the second half to keep Paw Paw from scoring even more goals.

Dowagiac finishes the 2012 campaign with a school record 13 victories. Senior Breanna Williams set the school record for goals in a single season with 33. In all, seven seniors gave the school it’s best girls soccer season ever.

“They have worked their tails off for over seven years,” Williams said. “They put a lot of effort into it. They are fantastic girls. We just ran into a really, really good Paw Paw team. We have just been unlucky that they have been in our district every year and not given us an opportunity to win a district championship. It’s the best overall girls soccer team I have ever had from front to back.”
