Dennis Carpenter

Address: Marcellus Highway, Dowagiac

Occupation: Retired banker after 39 years, 18 years with Fifth Third’s Dowagiac branch.

Also managed branches in Niles and Cassopolis and oversaw the Niles mortgage department for eight years.

The bank has also been known as First National Bank of Southwestern Michigan, Pacesetter and Old Kent.

Education: 1968 Niles High School graduate, attended Southwestern Michigan College and Andrews University, Berrien Springs.

If you hadn’t been in banking, what would you have done? I would have been an elementary teacher, but there were no positions available.

What would you do with a million dollars? I don’t know. I have no great desire to spend money. Probably help my family.

Favorite food: Lasagna

Last book read: I’ve read several since I retired of all kinds. The last was a mystery.

Favorite TV show: I don’t watch a lot.

Dream vacation: I’d love to go back to Mexico.

Best advice: To be real and honest and not try to be something you’re not from my boss at the beginning of my banking career.

What have you done in retirement? I spent some time with my daughter (Noelle, 2002 DUHS valedictorian; son Matthew graduated in 2005) and first grandchild (Fiona) in Kentucky.

My wife (Janice) is not retired so I help her and do a lot of yardwork. Everyone sees me out mowing.
