Parades planned for Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, Monday, southwest Michigan villages and cities will hold celebrations of remembrance throughout the holiday. Many residents anticipate the local celebrations to honor veterans past and present, lost loved ones and a national holiday.

Cassopolis:
Monday
• Memorial Day Parade, downtown Cassopolis (on Broadway)
• Line-up begins at 9 a.m., Jefferson and Water streets
• Parade begins at 10 a.m.
• Celebration Ceremony, Prospect Hill Cemetery
• Immediately following parade
• Luncheon, Cassopolis VFW, 131 S. Broadway St.
• Provided by Cassopolis Fire Department
• Free meal for any veteran
• The parade’s grand marshal will be posthumously granted to the late Ron Bass, a veteran and the department of public works superintendent for the Village of Cassopolis. Bass died Apr. 9 and was active in placing flags on graves at Prospect Hill Cemetery and putting flags put on posts around the village. Standing in his place for the parade will be his wife, Ruby Bass, and mother, Martha JoAnne Bass. To participate in the parade, either show up at 9 a.m. or call Edwin Johnson III at (269) 476-2435.

Dowagiac: Monday

Edwardsburg:
Monday
• Memorial Day Parade, downtown Edwardsburg
• Line-up begins 10 a.m.
• Parade begins 11 a.m.
• Veterans Ceremonies, area cemeteries
• Immediately following parade
• Luncheon, American Legion, located off U.S. 12
• Free meal for any veteran

Niles: Sunday

• Service, Mission Hills Cemetery, 11 a.m.
• Service, War Memorial at Riverfront Park, 1 p.m.
Monday:
• Memorial Day Parade, downtown Niles
• Line-up begins 9 a.m.
• Parade begins 10 a.m.
• Ceremony, Silverbrook Cemetery
• Service begins at 11:30 a.m.
• Pastor Jeff Whitaker will officiate; Brandywine High School Band will play.

Sister Lakes:
Sunday
