BERRIEN SPRINGS – Pinch runner Nate Lindsey scored from first in the top of the seventh to give Dowagiac a sweep of host Berrien Springs Wednesday.

The Chieftains defeated the Shamrocks 6-5 after taking the first game 3-1 in eighth innings.

Garrett Stark drew a walk in the seventh and was replaced by Lindsey to run. Smith followed with a double to give Dowagiac the one-run lead.

Austin Broda, the third Chieftain pitcher, came on in the bottom of the seventh and allowed one hit and struck out one to pick up the victory.

Dowagiac (9-24-1) finished with 11 hits in the contest. Dean Klann was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Brett Scanlon doubled and drove in two runs.

In the first game, Ryne Willming worked all eight innings, throwing just 85 pitches. He did not walk a batter and had a strikeout.

“The first game was a pitcher’s duel,” Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said. “Ryno has been very effective lately. I couldn’t be happier for the senior that is winding down his career.”

Willming has picked up a pair of wins for the Chieftains in the last seven days.

Dowagiac had seven hits in the first game, led by Logan Pellow who was 2-for-4. Klann doubled in three trips to the plate.

“The second game, neither team would give up,” Turner said. “We scored three in the fifth to take the lead and added one in the sixth. They scored three in the bottom to take the lead back. Berrien is a good program and we had to play well to beat them.”

The Shamrocks are now 20-8 on the season.
