The Dowagiac Community Garden, also known as “Dig! Dowagiac,” is taking root.

The group, which has six board members, has secured a location for the garden and needs the ground tilled for community planting.

Board members include Pennie Hammond, Jody Crandall, Vickie Gross, Carol Heflin, Linsey Tankersley and Lisa Thorne.

The community garden wish list includes hoses, wheelbarrows, garden tools, stakes and string for plant signs, tomato cages or wire, volunteers and members.

“Dig! Dowagiac” is also accepting cash donations for gardening items, including seeds and plant starts, garden supplies, insurance for the garden site, website hosting, water bills and scholarships for economic hardship applicants.

Garden plots are available in two sizes, but the group also has a communal plot. An informational meeting will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday at the ACTION Center, 301 Main St. The meeting is open to the public.
