COMSTOCK — The Dowagiac track team finished fifth at the Wolverine Conference Track & Field Championships in both boys and girls Tuesday.

But that doesn’t mean the Chieftains came away empty-handed.

In fact, Dowagiac claimed a pair of championships in the boys half of the meet and four titles in the girls meet.

Creona Rodgers won two individual championships.

Rodgers won the high jump with a leap of 5-3 and the long jump with a distance of 15-2.

Kennedy won the shot put with a school record toss of 37-0.5 and was second in the discus with a throw of 94-4. Kennedy broke her own school record in the shot put.

“Regina Kennedy ended her career with a record-breaking performance,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “Her discus throw was also a career best. Creona Rodgers was very good again.”

Chris Gantt captured the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:27.43 and was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.43.

Dontel Highsmith won the long jump with a leap of 22-5.75 and was second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.19.

He was named the Male Outstanding Athlete of the Meet.

Sam Courtney was second in both the shot put and the discus.

“All year our boys team has been a three-headed monster and that continued today,” Dowagiac coach Mike Stanger said. “Sam Courtney, Dontel Highsmith and Chris Gantt had a very good day at the conference and a great season.”
