Highsmith qualifies in two events

VICKSBURG — The Dowagiac track team qualified in four events for the Division 2 state track meet June 2.

Dontel Highsmith was a double qualifier as he finished third in the long jump and fifth in the 100 meters.

The Chieftains’ Chris Gantt qualified for the state meet in the 1,600 meters as he finished second.

Dowagiac placed 10th as a team with 34 points. Otsego was the winner with 73 points, while Edwarsburg was second with 72.5. Niles finished sixth with 51 points.

Gantt ran a time of 4:27.95 to advance to the state meet. The top two finishers, plus anyone who meets a qualifying standard moves on.

Highsmith jumped 21-1.25 in the long jump and ran a time of 11.42 in the 100 meters.

The Chieftain girls’ team placed 12th. Paw Paw won the meet with 81 points, while Niles was second with 62 points. Edwardsburg finished ninth.

Creona Rodgers was the lone Dowagiac girl to advance to the state finals as she finished second in the high jump with a height of 5-3. Niles’ Miranda Baker won the regional championship with the same height, but had fewer misses than Rodgers.
