On Thursday evening, it started with hot flashes. On Friday, I was a little run down and left work at 3:30 p.m.
Just in time for my weekend, I had a full-blown flu like gunk. I couldn’t get out of bed on Saturday. Lying in bed in a fevery sweat with a pounding head, aching body and a dry cough I realized how one could let the memory of a miserable experience disappear.
By Sunday morning, I realized it wasn’t getting better so I dragged myself to one of those 24/7 urgent care facilities. After a brief examination, I was sent away with a prescription for an antibiotic and a smile. I asked the doc what she felt was wrong. She smiled again and said, “I’m not sure, could be sinuses,” and walked away.  Oh, I miss my old family doctor from years gone by.
On Monday, I actually called in sick. I don’t do that. In my 38-year career I think I’ve called in sick seven times. And that was only because I had to go through some lovely procedure, like having my colon examined.
And today (Wednesday), I am feeling much better, thank you. My case of the gunk has now mutated into what seems to be a lousy head cold. My brain is like mush and I am trying to write a sentence, which seems to be taking 15 times as long as normal. OK. My pity party is over.
There is a 10-inch-high lawn ordinance in the City of Niles, and I found out Tuesday that we would be awarded a citation, as we’ve exceeded the limit. In my state of mind, I was wondering where we might hang it proudly.
This amazing accomplishment was done with only a small strip of lawn on Fifth Street between the sidewalk and the road. Without the award notification from the city I would have never noticed it, as I never am on that side of our building. Rhonda, our business manager, said no, not that kind of citation — we will have to pay the city if we don’t take care of the grass. We have a weed-eater out back and we promise Mayor Mike we’ll get within regulations this week.
A head cold can make you see the world in a different light and then it is gone.

Thank you to those who responded to my question “What would you like to see in your newspapers?” One reader from Edwardsburg would like to see us cover more state legislative news. While we do not have the resources to send a reporter to Lansing, we will do our best to publish legislative news pertaining to our region as we get it. I received multiple requests for us to return to publishing marriage and divorce notices.
I was told it is a good keepsake for a wedding scrapbook.
I guess the divorce notices would be good to troll for a new prospective mate.
