Dowagiac Board of Education thought it sold the Wolverine Building in March for $10,000 for a nonprofit Dowagiac Art Center.

But that deal fell through, so the school board Monday night returned to its other $10,000 bid, awarding the former administrative offices at 206 Main St. to local businessmen John A. Vylonis and David C. Mahar.

“We’re not sure what we’re going to do with it,” said Mahar, explaining the availability of parking might lend the site to professional offices. “We don’t have a firm game plan.

Built by Mark Judd, the Wolverine Building is so known because it was the home of Laing’s Wolverine Mutual Insurance Co. until the early 1970s, when the company built its current headquarters on M-62.

School administrators vacated it last October in their move to the second floor of city hall.
