Vikings play well in loss to Paw Paw

Published 6:39pm Sunday, May 13, 2012

Elena Olivaries had a pair of goals to help visiting Paw Paw edge Niles 3-1 in soccer Saturday afternoon.

It was a strong effort by the Vikings against a Redskins squad that picked up its 10th victory of the season.

Brei Davies put Paw Paw on the board first in the 11th minute and Olivares scored the first of her two goals seven minutes later as the Redskins opened up a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The Vikings got back into the match early in the second half when Abigail Gaines scored off an assist from Katlyn Miller to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

But Olivares dribbled through the heart of the Niles defense, made a nifty little move and beat Vikings’ keeper Eva Nemeth for the final goal of the match in the 67th minute.

Taylor Underhill had the assist on Paw Paw’s final goal.

The Redskins held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Nemeth made 11 seven saves, including a couple of the spectacular kind to help keep Niles in the match.

The Redskins’ Natalie Kmet had five stops.

“If you take away the two given mistakes (goal off a free kick and a penalty kick) and then you have a 1-1 game,” Niles coach Jo Schau said. “Granted our one goal was off of their goalie making a mistake and us capitalizing on it, but that’s all part of the game. We are still working.

“This was a lot better effort that we have been giving in the past. Even though districts are just around the corner, we are still trying to figure some things out.”
