SOUTH BEND — The Niles softball team went 1-2 at the Adams Classic Saturday.

The Vikings defeated South Bend Clay 11-3 for its lone victory of the day, but played well in its losses to host Adams (6-5) and Marian (7-1).

Megan McKeel earned the win against Clay as she scattered eight hits and allowed just three runs.

Olivia Jordan had three hits for Niles, which also got a double from Sarah Cramer.

Molly VanDerKeere took the loss in the other two games.

Tala Gentry had a double against both Adams and Marian.

“I was really proud of the way our girls battled in every game this weekend,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “We were down by four runs in the first game, but our girls really scraped all game to to keep us in it. We came out flat early on and picked up our play as the day went on. We took some big steps the past couple of weeks on defense and offense. Our girls are talking more and releying on each other more and more as this season has progressed.

“I thought in the Clay game we took advantage and of situations and broke open the game. We played an error-free game. We knew going into the Marion game they were gonna be tough. We just made a couple of mistakes and you can’t do that to a great team. All in all it was a good building process day for our Niles softball team. Our girls are putting things together and have shown great improvements.”
