On a night when Dowagiac honored its seniors before its match against Michigan Lutheran, two of them had a huge night against Michigan Lutheran Friday.

Seniors Kelsie Primley and Breanna Williams figured predominantly in the Chieftains’ 5-1 non-conference win over the Titans.

Primley had a pair of goals, while Williams had two goals and three assists.

Junior Alejandro Cano scored the matches’ second goal, which turned out to be the game winner.

Primley opened the scoring in the 11th minute off an assist by Williams.

After Molly Levi pulled Michigan Lutheran into a 1-1 tie in the 13th minute, Cano scored the game-winner in the 17th minute off an assist by Williams.

Williams opened the second half with a goal in the 51st minute before Primley picked up her second score of the night in the 62nd minute off an assist by Williams.

Williams then capped the scoring a minute later.

“I think we outran them there,” Williams said of the goal barrage toward the end of the match. “We kept our defense up and put pressure on them. We stayed connected.

“Bre played well, two goals and three assists. What we practiced yesterday (Thursday) they did today, which was offensive attacks. That’s all we practiced yesterday was finishing.”

Dowagiac outshot Michigan Lutheran 23-7.

Senior Chieftain keeper Alyssa Fritz had six saves. Katherine Siedleir had 18 saves for the Titans.

“They have been with me since fifth and sixth grade,” Mike Williams said of his senior class. “They have stayed together. We have only lost two of them through the years. Keeping a group together that long obviously will bring better results. I am proud of them for sticking with it when we only won three games.”
