Karen F. Stitt, 70, of Granger, Ind., formerly of Cassopolis and Edwardsburg, died suddenly Monday, May 7, 2012, in Indiana Heart Hospital, Indianapolis.

She was born Jan. 7, 1942, in Detroit to H. Donald and Vere (Iler) Pierce. She married Walter Robert Stitt in Detroit on Sept. 28, 1963. He survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Kerry Lynn Stitt; and one sister, Ellen Vere Pierce.
Karen was a homemaker. She and her husband were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cassopolis, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the bell choir. They took in and cared for more than 400 foster children through 40-plus years, five of whom they adopted.
Karen was interested in crafts and sewing. She loved people. She attended many activities for the children and grandchildren. She volunteered at the Village of Arbor Wood, working in the store and using every opportunity to converse.
Karen is survived by her husband, Walter R. Stitt, Sr., of Granger; four daughters, Lisa Stitt of Elkhart, Sue Ellen (Bobby) Young of Edwardsburg, Christina Stitt of Goshen, Ind., Holly Stitt of Elkhart; five sons, Walter R. “Bob” (Barbara) Stitt, Jr., of Edwardsburg, Dr. William “Bill” Stitt of Waldron, Dr. Wayne “Rusty” (Marny) Stitt of Schoolcraft, Wade (Trudy) Stitt of Battle Creek, Thomas John “T.J.” (Ashley) Stitt of Elkhart; 26 grandchildren; and one brother, the Rev. Douglas H. (Ruth Ann) Pierce of Sidney, Neb.
Family and friends gathered Wednesday, May 9 from 4 until 8 p.m. at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis. There was a time of sharing and story telling Wednesday at 7 p.m. led by Karen’s brother, the Rev. Douglas H. Pierce.
Additional calling will be today from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 305 W. State St., Cassopolis, with the Rev. Paul D. Doellinger officiating.
