Foundation awards $500 scholarships

Published 4:49pm Thursday, May 10, 2012

The Cassopolis Public School Foundation, chartered in 2009, awarded the first scholarships to three Cassopolis High School seniors Wednesday, totaling $500 each.

The three students who received the $500 scholarships had to meet criteria set by the foundation and the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation. Taylor Baker, Torri Irvine and Tyler Buttrick, all seniors, qualified for the scholarships and will be attending a community college or university after graduation.

“Those students will be registered full-time, and it’s really exciting that we could help,” Loupee said.

Since the foundation’s beginning nearly three years ago, the directors have strived to enhance the quality of education in Cassopolis. One of the main goals is to distribute resources that benefit students and, sometimes, teachers in the public school district.

“We’re a nonprofit organization, and we’ve begun working towards our goals as our funding grows,” John Loupee, foundation president, said.

The foundation is aiming to expand its number of board members and number of scholarships given. Eventually, it also would embark upon fundraising opportunities.

Donors can make contributions to the foundation and designate the funding to go to any of six areas: an impact, or general, fund, endowment fund, technology and learning, arts and education, cultural enrichment and scholarships.

“We would love to continue to grow and provide as much assistance as we can to our school district,” Loupee said.
