Two injured in crash

Daily News photo/CRAIG HAUPERT This Ford Explorer came to a rest on its side after a head-on collision with a Toyota Prius Monday morning on M-60 near Giles Street.

Two people were injured and traffic was held up for more than an hour after a head-on collision on M-60 Monday morning in Howard Township.

A white Toyota Prius driven by George Purlee, of Cassopolis, was heading east on M-60 near Giles Street when it hit a westbound Ford Explorer driven by Hugh Lane, of Dowagiac, at around 11 a.m.

A witness who said she was driving behind the Prius said the Prius started swerving for an unknown reason, crossed the centerline and collided with the Explorer.

The Explorer rolled and came to a rest on its side just off the north side of the road. The Prius remained upright on the north side of the road.

Both drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

No citations have been issued as the crash remains under investigation.Niles Township Fire, Howard Township Fire, Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance and Michigan State Police assisted.
