Eastside Connections School is looking for a few good volunteers to help with renovations to the second floor of the building this weekend.

Cable service provider Comcast is leading and sponsoring the volunteer effort. Comcast chose Eastside for its annual day of volunteering, Comcast Cares Day.

Work will be done from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Eastside, located at 314 N. 14th St., Niles.

Anyone can help, although an adult must be present to supervise children under the age 18.

Work will include scraping walls, removing wall fixtures, sanding and general cleanup.

Tammy Tallis, a fifth grade teacher at Eastside, said they are hoping to get 300 volunteers.

“People can stop in for a short time or stay the whole morning. Any help is appreciated,” she said.

The volunteer day will aid the expansion of Eastside, Niles’ first magnet school. There are 14 rooms on the second floor of Eastside, but only one is currently being used.

School officials hope to have at least two rooms fully renovated and ready for use by the start of next school year. If renovations go as planned, a fifth grade class and sixth grade class will be moved to the second floor. A third renovated room would be used as a community room or multi-purpose room.

Eastside is currently a kindergarten through fifth grade building, but school officials hope to eventually have two classes each kindergarten through eighth grade.

The volunteer day begins with free donuts and coffee at 7 a.m. An opening ceremony with speakers is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Work will begin tentatively at 8 a.m. and wrap up at noon.

A chicken port-a-pit will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
