Brandywine to lay off three teachers

Three teachers from Brandywine Community Schools have been informed they will be laid off at the end of the school year.

Supt. John Jarpe said he spoke to each of the teachers Monday but declined to provide the names of the teachers or the building in which they work. He said the names would be announced at next week’s board of education meeting, when the board is expected to take action on the layoffs.

The board is required to announce teacher layoffs before April 30 as per the current collective bargaining agreement.

Jarpe said the three teachers could be recalled. In fact, Brandywine layed off eight teachers last year and recalled all but two of them.

There are two primary reasons for the layoffs, Jarpe said. The first being a teacher is returning after a yearlong leave of absence and will fill a spot currently taken by another teacher. The second is an uncertainty in enrollment, especially at the kindergarten level.

Brandywine is doing kindergarten roundup this week and should soon have a clearer picture on kindergarten enrollment numbers.

“If by June we have the typical amount of kindergarten numbers that we have, then we can recall the people,” he said. “We will recall them as soon as it is feasible and possible.”

Layoffs are down this year, Jarpe said, because the district has already made necessary staff adjustments at the middle school and high school levels. He also said, in terms of enrollment, they’ve been able meet the needs of the kids enrolled.

The board will take action on the layoffs at the April 23 meeting in the Carlson Lecture Hall at Brandywine Middle/Senior High School.

Jarpe said layoffs are done based upon seniority.
