PAW PAW – Chris Gantt won a pair of events, while Sam Courtney took first and second in the throwing events to help Dowagiac to a fourth place finish at the Lions Invitational Saturday.

Gantt won the 800- and 1,600-meters with times of 2:02.35 and 4:33.32 respectively.

Courtney won the shot put with a toss of 41-9 and was second in the discus with a throw of 111-1.

Tristan Howard finished second in the shot put with a toss of 39-2. Dontel Highsmith was second in the 200-meters with a time of 23.78.

Vicksburg was the winner of the boys meet with 197.5 points. Mattawan was second with 75 and host Paw Paw third with 73. The Chieftains finished with 70.5 points.

“We are very proud of Chris Gantt and Sam Courtney,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “We left a few points on the track. We will continue to work to put things together. Our goal is to peak for conference and regional.”

Dowagiac also finished fourth in the girls meet, which was won by host Paw Paw with 159 points. Vicksburg was second with 153 points and Mattawan third with 98 points. The Chieftains finished with 54 points.

Creona Rodgers won a pair of events for Dowagiac.

She captured the long jump with a leap of 14-5.5 and the high jump with a height of 4-8.

Regina Kennedy was second in both the shot put and discus. Her shot put toss was 33-feet and her discus toss was 88-feet.

“Creona Rodgers had a good day in the field events on a day she was not at 100 percent,” Jordan said. “Regina Kennedy was strong as usual in the throws. We also have some work to do on the track and I’m confident we’ll put things together as the season progresses.”

Dowagiac is now off until Friday when it compets in the Comstock Colts Invitational.
