Dowagiac hosting tourneys Saturday

The Dowagiac soccer and softball teams will host tournament Saturday.

The Chieftain Invitational Soccer Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and will be a round robin format.

Dowagiac will take on Niles in the opening match at 10 a.m. The game will consist of two 30-minute halves.

The Vikings will then take on River Valley at approximately 11:30 a.m. with the third and final match pitting the Chieftains against the Mustangs at approximately 1 p.m.

Overall record will decide the championship. If there is a tie, then number of goals scored, then least amount of goals allowed and quickest score in the tournament will be the tiebreaker criteria.

The Chieftains are the defending champions having defeated Niles 1-0 and River Valley 4-0.

Admission is free and concessions will be available.

Softball

The Chieftain Invitational will feature eight teams playing on four fields Saturday.

Participating along with Dowagiac will be Hartford, Mishawaka Marian, Dundee, Kalamazoo Central, Berrien Springs, Niles and White Lake.

Games, which begin at 10:30 a.m., will be played at the high school field, Rotary Park, Russom Field and the JV field located behind the high school field.

In the opening round, Dowagiac will take on Hartford at the high school field, Marian will face Dundee at Rotary Park, Kalamazoo Central will take on Berrien Springs at Russom Field and Niles will face White Lake on the JV field.

The winner of the Chieftains-Indians contest will take on the winner of the Marian-Dundee game at the high school field in the semifinals.

The Kalamazoo Central-Berrien Springs and Niles-White Lake winners will play against each other at Russom Field in the semifinals.

Consolation games will be played at Rotary Park and the JV field.

The championship game will be played at the high school field, the third place game at Russom Field, the fifth place game at Rotary Park and the seventh place game at the JV field.

There is no admission fee and there will be concessions available.

Last year’s tournament was canceled due to the weather.
