THREE RIVERS — Creona Rodgers turned in outstanding individual performance for the Dowagiac track team in its season opener Tuesday afternoon.

While the Chieftains were swept by host Three Rivers in the Wolverine Conference meet, Rodgers won four events for Dowagiac.

The Chieftains’ Regina Kennedy was also a double winner Tuesday.

Dowagiac was defeated by the Wildcats 74-47 in the girls meet and 101-36 in the boys meet.

Rodgers won the high jump (4-6), long jump (15-7) and the 200-meters (28.87) as an individual and then teamed with Jacoya Brookins, Rosodio Murray and sister Correisha Rodgers to win the 800-meter relay (1:57.37).

Kennedy won the shot put (32-2) and the discus (89-2). Correshia Rodgers also won the 100-meters (14.46), Angel Parker won the 100 hurdles (19.77) and Murray won the 300 hurdles (54.71).

Chris Gantt won the 1600-meters (4:54.02) and 3200-meters (10:51.62).

Dowagiac also won the 800-meter relay (1:36.84) with Dontae Murphy, Kyle Solloway, Lucas Petro and Dontel Highsmith. Highsmith won the long jump with a leap of 21-11.5.

“We had a lot of new athletes debut with some encouraging results,” Dowagiac coach Ken Jordan said. “Despite only competing with 11 athletes, the girls won nine events and kept the score close until late in the meet. Sophomore Creona Rodgers won three individual events and was on a winning relay.

“On the boys side, Chris Gantt was a double winner and Dontel Highsmith won the long jump with an outstanding effort and anchored a winning relay. All in all we were very encouraged by our efforts.”
