STURGIS – Host Sturgis scored a goal in each half and blanked Edwardsburg 2-0 in girls non-conference soccer play Thursday night.

Mikayla Kunce opened the scoring as he was awarded a free kick and beat the Edwardsburg keeper with a shot that came in just below the cross bar to make it 1-0.

The score would remain that way the remainer of the first half.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, Jaime Fields picked up a loose ball in front of the Eddies net to score the final goal and give the Trojans a 2-0 victory.

“Well our season started on a sour note, but not a bad one,” Edwardsburg coach Brett Harrins said. “We lost 2-0 giving up a goal in each half. We struggled against the wind in the first half and gave up a lot of shots (from a long ways away), but held strong for the majority of the half. Sturgis had three or four good scoring opportunities and scored on a free kick from the 18-yard line.

“We had two good scoring opportunities of our own in the first half that we couldn’t cash in on. But I was pleased with the first half, especially since we started two freshman and two sophomores. We attacked hard in the second half and couldn’t get behind the defense for many opportunities and Sturgis countered our attack and scored their second goal.”
