A pair of top five girls basketball teams will square off Tuesday night at Bangor High School in the Class C state quarterfinals.
The No. 2-ranked Concord Yellow Jackets will be trying to eliminate No. 4-ranked Brandywine from the state tournament.
Concord (25-0) won its first regional championship Thursday night with a 42-26 victory over Springport. The win was not as easy as the final score might indicate.
The Yellow Jackets were down five at halftime before rallying for the easy victory.
While Concord is in its first quarterfinal, the Bobcats (24-1) are no strangers to this level of the tournament.
Brandywine captured its third straight regional title with a win over Mendon Thursday. The Bobcats were in the semifinals in 2010 and were quarterfinalists last season.
In fact, Brandywine is only the third southwest Michigan girls basketball team to capture three consecutive regional titles. The other were St. Joseph (1992-94) and Lake Michigan Catholic (1986-88 and 1999-2001).
The Bobcats’ 24 victories tie the school record. The 2009-19 and 1989 teams also had 24 wins.
Among the players the Bobcats have to concern themselves with are Julyane Brigham and Courtney Clark. Brigham had six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals Friday night. Clark finished with five points and 12 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Megan Redman’s 16 points.
Tip-off for Tuesday night’s contest is set for 7 p.m. The winner advance Thursday’s semifinals at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University.
