CASSOPOLIS — A Vandalia teenager, who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl, is headed to prison.

Pierce Lanway, 18, was sentenced Friday in Cass County Circuit Court to four to 15 years in prison on a criminal sexual conduct third degree conviction. It was part of a plea agreement that dismissed a first degree CSC charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Lanway is accused of forcing the girl into vaginal and oral sex in October of last year. It is believed that Lanway was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz said the assault will likely affect the victim and his family for the rest of their lives. Fitz said the girl has suffered from sleepless nights and has had a hard time concentrating at school since the incident.

“It’s been devastating on the mother and father,” Fitz added. “It will be imprinted on their mind forever.”

For his part, Lanway expressed his remorse.
“I’m very sorry for the mistake I’ve made,” he said. “I’m going to do everything in my will power to never make that mistake again.”
Lanway must register as a sex offender.
