Niles will be alive with “The Sound of Music” this weekend when Niles High School students revive the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic for the school’s annual spring musical.

Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Niles High School auditorium. Prices are $7 for general admission and $5 for seniors. Tickets can be purchased before hand at the high school and at the door.

“It’s one of our favorites, and people seem to like the story and the music,” said the show’s artistic director Lisetta Zahm. “I think most people do know the musical, and that’s why they come back and see it. It should be a lot of fun for everyone.”

Junior Stuart Coulston will play the role of Navy Captain Georg von Trapp, a widower who lives with his seven children in the hills of Austria.

“I am usually such a positive and energetic guy, so for me the hardest part was to play a character that is so serious and stern,” said Coulston, who has been acting since the fourth grade.

A nun, Maria Rainer, played by senior Kaytlyn Miller, is sent to help Captain von Trapp take care of his children. Rainer eventually falls in love with the Captain.

Miller plans to major in vocal performance at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids.

“It is something that I’d like to do, but I don’t really want to make a career out of it,” Miller said.

The musical is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp and features classic musical pieces such as “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things.”

“I think people will enjoy it because it is a love story,” Zahm said. “With the background, you think of the Alps, you think of another time and place, pre-war time. It appeals to different people for different reasons.”
