AUBURN HILLS — Donte Stevens of Niles, Chance Ravish of Brandywine, along with Buchanan’s Jeff Mucha and Gage Hutchison opened the MHSAA Individual State Wrestling Finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills with first round victories Thursday afternoon.

Undefeated Hutchison (54-0) needed just 1:29 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division 3 state finals. He will wrestle Jay Sroufe of Dundee (44-9), who defeated Sam Deschaine of Frankenmuth 12-5.

Mucha decisioned Carlton’s Bryce Baase 7-1 at 135.

Stevens won by major decision over New Boston Huron’s Logan Ritchie, 13-0. Stevens (34-8) will now face Gabe Stephanovich of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern in the quarterfinals. Stephanovich is 35-10 on the season.

Also in Division 2, Niles’ Brenden Meek was pinned by Clio’s Mason Smith (1:17) in the opening round, while the Vikings’ Ryan Casey was decisioned by Spring Lake’s Andrew Hissom 11-3.

At 135, Casey Burandt was pinned by Nick Baker of Dewitt in 2:37. Fritzel Findeisen lost an overtime decision to Allegan’s Drew Huff at 152-pounds, 7-5.

Ravish (47-3) pinned Dansville’s Luke Ragon in 5:19. Ravish will face Jonesville’s Nick Barnhill (49-3) in the quarterfinals. It was the 99th pin of his career.

Brandywine’s Victor Moranchel was defeated by Jimmy Spencer of Rudyard in his opening round match at 103 as he was pinned in 2:56.

Also in Division 4, Cassoopolis’ Dominic Forbes was pinned by Bishop Foley’s Brenton Pippin in 26 seconds.

Wrestling action continues at The Palace Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with the first round of consolation matches. The championship quarterfinals is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and the semifinals at 7 p.m.
