Brandywine’s starters played just one quarter Wednesday night, but it was good enough to get the No. 4-ranked Bobcats to the Class C District championship game for the fourth straight year.

Brandywine (21-1) outscored Benton Harbor Dream Academy 36-4 in the opening eight minutes and then rested its starters the remainder of the evening en route to a 58-21 victory.

The Bobcats will take on New Buffalo (17-2) as the Bison knocked off Bridgman 62-19 in the first semifinal Wednesday night. Friday night’s championship game is slated for 7 p.m.

Brandywine’s 36 first quarter points are a new school record as the Bobcats ran their home winning streak to 31 games.

Carlie Newman and Madison Pellow, Brandywine’s two seniors, did most of the damage in the opening eight minutes.

Pellow had all 12 of her points in the paint, while Newman scored both from the outside and inside to finish the night with 10 points.

From that point on Brandywine coach Josh Hood turned it over to what amounted to his JV squad to play the final three quarters and gain some valuable varsity experience.

Although being outscored by the Toros in the second half 13-10, the Bobcats’ reserves ended up holding a 22-17 advantage over Dream Academy in the final three quarters of action.

“In our program, we try to pride ourselves in three things,” Hood said. “One of those is always play with class. Another one is always play hard and the last one is playing for championships. So we are excited to be playing Friday night for another championship.

“We are going to have to bring our ‘A’ game. The message is real clear to the girls. Nobody remembers the district runner-up. We are going to have to play a real good game. We are going to have to be physical. The first time we played them (New Buffalo) they were very physical on the glass. We’ve got to do a real good job on those girls and keep them off the glass. And of course, we want to get up and down the court.”

Brandywine defeated New Buffalo 63-51 at the Bobcats’ holiday tournament.

The Bobcats increased their 32-point first quarter advantage to 48-8 by halftime, which allowed for a running clock the entire second half.

Brandywine led 54-12 heading into the fourth quarter.

Besides Newman and Pellow, Rachael Ort scored nine points and Hannah Horst six off the bench.

Keyosha Abdullah led the Toros with 10 points.

In the opening semifinal, New Buffalo raced out to a 9-0 lead and was never headed in defeating the Bees.

Lena Madison led the Bison with a game-high 30 points. Sister Jade Madison finished with 17.

Bridgman was led by Sam Wagner and Lexy Deckert, both of whom scored six points.
